Mondays with Saul: The Racers, Seven Year Itch another Hitchcock and a short
Sorry our Monday's with Saul is meeting later today than usual, but I spent a long time running from one virtual library to another looking for the title sequence to The Racers (1955)--no luck, so Seven Year Itch, the great Billy Wilder comedy, was easy and next. It is included below. Here is Saul Bass, primitive. All the modernity shape and style, the moving text--really, quite wonderful, humorous title sequence. I've also linked to the blogs headline Christian Annya's web page(the Movie title stills collection) on Seven Year Itch (Mr Annyas, no luck on The Racers for you too, I see).
Bass's work on North by Northwest is an example of more modern animating abilities and, as is appropriate to the themes of the film, more moving text. It also displays a wry wit with the final moving title card over Hitchcock missing the bus. Also, included below (and, also something of a challenge to embed here as MGM has killed all the embed abilities for the titles).
Up top today is short that gives is an homage to Bass which short, contains a lot essential info and relevant commentary and bio from industry pros. I liked this piece and have chosen to share because its rhythm and style is something like a Saul Bass designed.
So, until our next Monday with Saul---
