The Manxman: Best of the Hitchcock 9, final part in three part series
The Manxman had been temporarily removed from the Archive database; it's now back and embedded below. You might want to watch or download this great film sooner rather than later. Favorites are personal choices, and while Aristotelian rules etc may be applied, but your heart is the final arbiter. My heart has always been torn between these three films as to which is his finest. The Manxman wins this wrestling match most days of the week.
The Manxman (1928)
Hitchcock's final all-silent film, and in many ways, his most beautiful. I've shown this film numerous times to students and invariably, it is selected as one of the best films of the semester (out of 20 or so titles from all periods).
Despite their differing backgrounds, fisherman Pete and lawyer Philip have been life long friends on the Isle of Man. Pete wants to marry Kate, the landlord's daughter at the local inn, however Kate's father doesn't think he is good enough. Pete leaves the island to seek his fortune abroad and entrusts Kate to Philip, but they start to be attracted to each other. (© IMDB)
