So it was our fault after all . . .The Birds solved

Time Magazine reports the scientists have solved the mystery of 1961 bird invasion which was the alleged inspiration for Hitchcock's film. This makes good copy and reinforces that 30 years beyond his death, Hitch still sells--but, unfortunately it's not true. The Birds was based on the  Daphne du Maurier short story written years before and numerous other bird events.  You'll find Time Magazine's story here.
