Ludovic Bource poses backstage with the award for Best Original Score in a Motion Picture for the film "The Artist" during
On the red carpet, Ludovic Bource, the composer for "The Artist," discussed the controversy - raised by "Vertigo" actress Kim Novak - about the film's use of a bit of the score from that Hitchcock classic. "For us, it was really important to make a tribute, to the wonderful master, Bernard Herrmann," the composer for "Vertigo," Mr. Bource said. Mr. Bource called Ms. Novak, who compared the appropriation of the score to rape, "a fantastic person" and said he didn't want any confusion about why they chose the music. ""The music of Herrmann needs to be recognized, that's why we did this,"" he said.
Later, Bource won the Golden Globe for best original score for a motion picture.

I am a great admirer of Ms. Novak's work, especially in Vertigo. Yet I am baffled by the outrage over the use of the Herrmann score in The Artist (presuming all legal requirements to reference it were met): is it not such homage that will keep her work alive for generations to come, bringing more and younger viewers to the film?
