Hitchcock aficionados will know that JM Barrie's Mary Rose was the classic Hitchcock film that never made it to the big screen.  It came tantalizingly close in the 60's--but Rose was a special play that profoundly moved Hitch when he saw it as a young man, so turning that cherished memory into a film was a risk that the director couldn't take.

This excellent piece from today's Independent discusses Hitchcock's obsession with the work and a new production of the play in London.
