Andrew Sarris Dies at 83

Pussycat.pngHeaven will be coffee at a small table in Paris with Andrew Sarris, Robin Wood and Francois Truffaut--and, look, there comes Eric Rohmer and Claude Chabrol.  The only quiet moment at this table is when we notice, deep in the back of the cafe, sitting at a white linen-clothed table, is the occupant responsible for our finding much joy and meaning in our former lives, his famous profile briefly illuminated by the cigar he has lit, only to vanish behind the red ember like a certain character in one of his film.

The American Cinema Andrew Sarris Inset - P 2012Andrew Sarris defined for many of us American Cinema in the book of the same name; he codified the auteur theory that right (mostly) or wrong (a little) has launched a thousand young artists at the task of filling that blank rectangle in the cinema.

Until that celestial moment, adieu Andrew.  Keep a seat warm for the rest of us.
