In Digital Vertigo, he uses Alfred Hitchcock's classic 1958 film Vertigo as a metaphor, comparing the seduction and deception of Jimmy's Stewart's character to the addictive allure of social media applications such as Facebook and Twitter.
In the movie, actress Kim Novak plays a seductive blonde who tricks Stewart's character, a retired detective, into becoming an unwitting accomplice to murder.
In a telephone interview with the reviewer, Keen argues that "free" social media applications seduce and trick people into sharing massive amounts of personal information — information that can be sold to advertisers.
